Effect of unemployment on family unit:
Decline in standard of living: families must rely on social welfare payments when the become unemployed this decreases their standard of living as the provision of basic needs become difficult
Repossession of family home: missed mortgage repayments due to loss of employment can lead to family home being repossessed causing the family to be homeless.
Relationship Problems: Couples become strained. Financial stress , Former breadwinner may cause tension due to resentment of being unemployed while partner still works.
Decline in education success: Children school work may be affected due to worrying about parents financial situation. Teenagers may drop out of school and get a job to support family.
causes of unemployment:
Geographical Location: rural areas tend to have higher rates of unemployment than urban areas. This is a result of multinational companies setting up in urban areas due to better telecommunications and infrastructure.
Foreign/Global competitors: cheaper imported goods has lead to reduced demand for goods produced in Ireland.This has affected jobs directly in manufacturing industry and indirectly in the service industry.
Low Incentive: in some cases social welfare payments can be more financially rewarding than low paying jobs, providing little incentives for long term unemployment to return to work.
Economic Recession: downturn in the economy results in job loss and increases the reliance on social welfare.
Seasonal Factors: Some forms of employment are seasonal e,g fishing or tourism. During the off-peak season many employees in these industries are made redundant, increasing unemployment.
Automation/ Technological advances : Advances in technology have resulted in automated machines e.g self service checkout. this has lead to higher unemployment rates.
Demand for products and service : little disposable income, especially in times of the recession impacts the demand for products and services, as individuals spending power is reduced. this leads to employees being laid off, increasing unemployment.
effects of unemployment on the individual:
Financial insecurity: loss of employment can leave individuals unable to keep on top of their mortgage/ rent bills. This may led to debt and falling below poverty line.
Loss of identify and status: when people become unemployed they lose their sense of identity and status. Makes them feel undervalued,causing feelings of low-self worth
Social Isolation; Isolates people from social contact. This can lead to feelings of social isolation and lonliness.
Depression/ Destructive habits: several job refusals and inability to obtain work can reduce long term unemployed individuals self esteem and can create feelings of failure. this can increase the risk of depression and bad habits e,g drugs and alcohol. Can also cause suicide.
Effects of unemployment on society:
Emigration: low levels of work, people emigrate leading to depopulation , low birth rates and isolation of older people
Antisocial Behavior: unemployment resulting in boredom may cause an increase in anti social behavior e,g drugs/alcohol/crime/vandalism
Increase in taxes; Government increases taxes on those working to cover the cost of budget/social welfare payments.
Unemployment Cycle: Children from unemployed household are more likely to be unemployed themselves in the future. They have no opportunities to have access to some resources e.g educational resources.
