Big businesses
The value of German industry rose and big profits were made. The average salary of managers rose by nearly 70% between 1934 and 1938.
Small businessess
Many small shops were finding it difficult to survive because of competition from large department stores. So, the Nazis banned new department stores and stopped existing ones growing, enabled craftsmen to control their trade, and closed down Jewish businesses.
Between 1936 and 1939 the number of self-employed craftsmen fell from 1,650,000 to 1,500,000, however the value of their trade nearly doubled between 1933 and 1937.
