        In 1793, the Daedalus kidnapped two Maori men to teach Europeans how to work the flax
        
        Plan failed as only women knew how to work flax
        
        15000 Maori living in Bay of Islands around 1800, most had contact with Europeans for trade
        
        Soon many ships arrived for shipbuilding materials and Maori realized value of trading flax and timber
        
        Busiest and only town in NZ was Kororareka in Bay of Islands, a wild place due to drunken sailors, brawling, and prostitution
        
        Prostitution was new to Maori, began to trade sex for items and trinkets
        
        Port Jackson meanwhile growing fast, and some Maori ventured over there

        Days after utu and feast, some warriors sent onto Boyd to loot, and gunpowder exploded, killing many warriors including Te Ara's father
        
        They then dressed int he crews clothes as a disguise and boarded the ship by night
        
        The news of the massacre spread, and Europeans warned to stay away from NZ shores
        
        Te Pahi's name somehow mixed in with reports, and some whalers attacked his Pa and killed 15 Maori
        
        First they led some of the crew into the forest, supposedly to choose Kauri spars, and killed them, including the captain

        Marsden sent 2 missionaries, Kendall and Hall, to prove NZ safe, they arrived in Rangihoea in 1814

        Hika keen to learn European skills and and to have Europeans in NZ
        
        Marsden given permission to go to NZ and set up a mission
        
        Arrived on ship called the Active, in December 1814
