Key Ideas
Introduction
People make the Future. It is not like weather. It is a decision
Steve Jobs discovered a market need for smart phones or tablets. Soo he designed a category
Future does not happen to us. It happens because of us
Get out of the present
Visitors from the future
They seem crazy in the present but they are right about future
Backcast vs foecast
Forecast is good when you are in a trajectory and when you want to build up on that
When it comes to breakthroughs it is not good
Forecasting assumes same problems taht we have today will be there in future as well
Hence it assumes future also works on same rules as today
Backcasting
Assume current constraints not existent
Current markets might not be valid for future
Start from future and work backward
Step 1 - Look for inflections
Exponential inflections power massive breakthroughs
Technical inflections
Exponential improvements in
Performance
Price
Example: Computational power, sensor accuracy, bandwidth
Adoption Inflections
Non linear changes in adaptation rate of a technology
Regulatory inflections
Easing of restrictions on telemedicine
Belief Inflections
Involve contradicting long holding beliefs
Some ideas sound heresy today might be viewed reasonable in the future
Entrepreneurs who live in the present make the mistake of starting with the market first
If you want a breakthrough idea in elder care you cannot start looking at current pain points, market openings looking for unserved whilespace. Start looking for inflections that could create massive condition changes
Step 2 - Backcast from potential future
Backcasting considers more exponential and surprising futures
Plausible, Possible, Preposterous
Plausible
You would not anticipate them but makes sense when you hear them
Ex:OKTA solution of unified identity management solution across cloud products
Possible future
Usually starts as a hobby or passion that could lead to an unexpected breakthrough
Preposterous Futue
Seems Crazy to almost everyone
What Elon Must does today
Elon is naturally harnessing the power of multiple inflections
Step 3 - Gather breakthrough insights
Asking right questions from right people
Poor insight may result in a mundane opportunity even with great execution
Insights are different than analysis
Uncover ideas that are surprising
Not based on facts that can be analysed
What assumptions about the future might be wrong?
What is less likely yo happen than many believe
What would be the worst outcome
What could happen with this inflection tat is more likely than most believe
Best to collect multiple insights and compare and contrast them
Brainstrom, argue about the future you are exploring
BET ON YOU
You are betting on your insight

Usually early in the career we all relentless and restless
But later in your career this is not going to work
It’s like sprinting all you can, and then you turn a corner and find that you are actually setting out on a marathon,
Right now, I see a surge of concern about speed: getting ahead and staying ahead. More clients use similar metaphors about “running to stand still” or feeling “caught on a track.” Invariably, their first response is to speed up and run faster.
Ego dirve to Co-drive
let go of his obsession with his own development, his own needs, his own performance, and his own pace. Second, he must start obsessing about other people.
slow down and let go of some of the issues that have been your driving forces: power, prestige, responsibility, recognition, or face-time.
The talent phase in our careers tends to be profoundly self-centered, even narcissistic.
Co-drive requires that you momentarily forget yourself — and instead focus on others
Beyond team work
Rather than striving to be energetic, he should aim to be energizing
Be energizing, not energetic
with the co-drive mindset, Nick needs to widen his sights and recognize and reward people who are good at energizing others. Energizing behavior is unselfish, generous, and praises, not just progress, but personality too
Seek self-propulsion, not pace-setting
Sustainable speed is achievable only if the team propels itself without your presence
Self-propulsion comes from letting go of control, resisting the urge to make detailed corrections and allowing for informal leadership to flourish
Leading from the side-line, not the front line will change his perspective. Instead of looking at the road and navigating traffic, he is able to monitor how the driver is actually doing and what needs to improve
Congregate, don’t delegate
But there is more to co-drive than plain teamwork. It is about re-working the collaborative process it self.
Rather than cubicled problem-solving, sustainable speed requires a shift toward more collective creation: Gathering often, engaging issues openly and inviting others to improve on your own thoughts and decisions.
Maturity and Caliber
Headhunters call this change of perspective from ego-drive to co-drive “executive maturity.” The mature leader’s burning question is: how do I help others perform?
