Is a verb tense which is used to show that an action started in the past and continued up to another point in the past.
STRUCTURE
Affirmative
Subject + had + been + (verb) present participle
You had been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived.
Interrogative
Had + subject + been + (verb) present participle
Had you been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived?
Negative
Subject + had not/hadn't + been + (verb) present participle
They hadn't been studying very hard.
Past Perfect
The past perfect tense is used to show that something happened before another action in the past. It can also be used to show that something happened before a specific time in the past.
STRUCTURE
Affirmative
subject + had + (verb) past participle)
I washed the floor when the painter had gone.
Interrogative
had + subject + (verb) past participle.
Had you cleaned up the mess by the time they came home?
Negative
subject + had not/ hadn't + (verb) past participle)
I had not eaten at that restaurant before today.
