Waves - Coggle Diagram
Waves
Properties of Waves
Amplitude
The maximum displacement
Wavelength
The distance covered by a whole wave cycle
Trough
The lowest point below rest position
Peak
The highest point above rest position
Time Period
The time taken for a full cycle
Displacement
The distance of a point from rest position
Frequency
The number of waves passing a point each second
Rest Position
Undisturbed position of particles or fields
Wave Velocity
The speed of the wave
Types of Waves
Longitudinal Waves
Particle motion parallel to wave motion
Can only travel through medium
Moves through compression and expansion.
Mechanical waves
Can be both transverse and longitudinal
Can only travel through a medium
Transverse waves
Particle motion moves perpendicular to wave motion
Some waves can travel in a vacuum while other need a medium.
Electromagnetic waves
Is only transverse
Can travel through a vacuum
Can travel through electrical and magnetic fields
Electromagnetic spectrum
Wave Equations
Frequency formula
f=1/T
f is frequency
T is period
Wave velocity formula
v=f λ
f is frequency
Lambda (λ) is wavelength.
v is velocity
Wave number formula
k=2π/λ
k is wave number.
2π is used as a mathematical constant.
Lambda (λ) is wavelength.
