- - - - Most primary producers are photoautotrophic. They use light as the energy source for transforming inorganic nutrients into organic matter through a process called photosynthesis
    - - Some primary producers are chemoautotrophic. They can use the chemical energy contained in certain substances in their environment to transform inorganic nutrients into organic matter through a process called chemosyntesis
  - - - Heterotrophic organisms or consumers cannot produce organic nutrients by themselves, so they must get them from their environment.
        
        Animals, fungi, protozoa, and some bacteria are examples of heterotrophic organisms.
      - Autotrophic living organisms convert inorganic nutrients (wich have no energetic value to cells) into organic nutrients of high energetic value.
    - - Primary consumers
        
        Primary consumers are organisms that feed on autotrophic organisms such as plants. All herbivores are primary consumers
      - Secondary consumers
        
        Secondary consumers feed on other consumers. All carnivores are secondary consumers.
      - Decomposers
        
        Decomposers feed on the remains or wastes of other organisms-both primary producers and consumers-and break down organic matter into inorganic nutrients. They are mainly fungi and bacteria.

        The green color of autotrophs comes from a pigment called chlorophyll. This substance allows cells to capture and use the energy from sunlight.
