Protocols

30/30 lightening rule
-
If possible get to an indoor space. After that comes getting low, a ditch or depression are good options. avoid caves, singled out trees, and bodies of water. if your are in high elevation, try to quickly get lower before the lightening gets worse.
I was hiking the great range in the Adirondacks when a storm system hit. We used the 30/30 rule to determine it's danger. It was not yet dangerous but we still defended from the mountain we were on.
in a boat, you want to try to get to land if you notice high winds, water levels rising, temp drop, storm rolling in.

Flooding
-
While hiking trails can get slippery and dangerous. rain can soak your gear, leaving you for hypothermia very quickly even in the summer. rain can also be a major threat if you are in a boat. Waters can rise and pick up speed very quickly.
The year or 2 before I paddled on the Pecos River in Texas, it flooded. Because it is in a Vally, the Vally filled and the water wiped out everything in its way. The folk that listened to the forecast got out of the Vally quickly. Because all the water came from a storm that hit miles away, those just watching the sky had no clue. scary stuff.
