Whenever there is a natural disaster or civil war, pleads are made to add funds to help those in need. Many of these pleads are by single organisations, but they are often made by umbrella groups such as the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). An umbrella organization is an association of institutions, who work together formally to coordinate activities or pool resources. In business, political, or other environments, one group, the umbrella organization, provides resources and often an identity to the smaller organizations. The DEC works with a range of NGOs to provide urgent help and relief. DEC also works with thirteen leading UK aid charities in times of crisis. Since its launch in 1963, it has run 67 appeals and raised more than £1.4 billion.
