Technically
Traditionally, wa'd is unilateral in nature and binds the promisor only
Literally
Promise of undertaking. Wa'd is a promise which connotes an expression of commitment given by a promisor to another party to carry out specified actions in the future.
Leglality of Wa'd
Al-Quran
God will not take you to task for oaths which you may have uttered without thought, but will take you to task (only) for what your hearts have conceived (in earnest): for God is much forgiving, forebearing [Quran, 2:255]
Majority of Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali thought and a few Maliki school
A promise made by a person to the other is religously binding (mulzium diyanatan) but no legally binding (mulzium qada'an)
