A Closer Look at Blood Vessels
Veins
after blood moves through capillaries, it enters larger blood vessels called veins, which carry blood back to the heart
Arteries
when blood leaves the heart, it travels through arteries
the coronary arteries carry blood to the heart
Artery Structure
artery walls consist of three layers
the middle layer consists mostly of muscle tissue
the outermost layer is made up of flexible connective tissue
the innermost layer, which is made of epithelial tissue, is smooth, this smooth surface enables blood to flow freely
Blood Pressure
pressure is the force that something exerts over a given area
what causes blood pressure
blood exerts a pressure, called blood pressure, against the walls of blood vessels
blood pressure is caused by the force with which the ventricles contract
measuring blood pressure
blood pressure can be measured with an instrument called a sphygmomanometer
Capillaries
in the capillaries, materials are exchanged between the blood and the body's cells
materials are exchanged between the blood and the body cells by diffusion
diffusion is the process by which molecules move from an area where they are more concentrated to less concentrated
