After 10 days of suffering, Calchas, a seer, reveals to Agamemnon the root of the plague

Achilles refuses, Ag threatens to come to Achilles' tent to steal B

That night, Ag puts Chryseis on a ship back to her father and sends for Briseis to be escorted from Achilles' tent

She promises to take the matter up with Zeus once he returns from a 13 day feast with the Aethiopians
Meanwhile, Odysseus returns Chryseis and Chryses, overjoyed, prays to Apollo to lift the plague
But, ever since his quarrel with Ag, Achilles refuses to fight
After 12 days, thetis makes her appeal to Zeus, who is reluctant to help as his wife, Hera, favours the Greeks
However, he agrees to help - making Hera livid
Her son, Hephaestus persuades her not to plunge the gods into conflict over the mortals
