Diagnosis
Uterine cultures
This procedure of collecting uterine swabs for culture and sensitivity is to determine the presence of pathogenic organisms in the uterus and their sensitivity to antibiotics
The identification and sensitivity tests are beneficial in making an accurate diagnosis in selecting the proper treatment, respectively. Diagnostic test also should be conducted for vibriosis and trichomoniasis in herds using natural service
Uterine biopsies
This technique of collecting uterine biopsies for histopathological examination may confirm the presence of endometritis, an important cause of infertility.
Endometritis may be from poor sanitation, complications or contamination at the time of parturition, or from pneumovagina during the postpartum period
Blood samples
Tests performed on blood should include hemoglobin, protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, and serological examination
The results of these detect nutritional deficiencies or previous disease conditions in the herd
For example, in blood analyses conducted on 1,333 dairy cows, hemoglobin values below 9.8 g/100 ml were associated with anestrus and repeat breeding in 530 cows.
Phosphorus deficiency also can cause infertility
The routine serological examination include IBR, BVDB. Blood tests for leptospirosis and brucellosis also may be indicated
Feed samples
Silage, hay, and grain samples are analyzed for protein, total digestible nutrients, calcium, phosphorus and trace minerals
This information is used to compare the feed intake of cows of varying production with National Research Council requirements. This information should be correlated with results of blood test
Evaluation of Information and Diagnosis
The history, feeding and management practices, data collected from the herd examination, and laboratory results should be evaluated to establish a diagnosis
An accurate diagnosis can be achieved only by critically evaluating each of the above areas and then correlating all information
