- - - - Biggest and most well-known concentration camp.
      - more than one million Jews alone were murdered
- - - - Germany was one of the worst affected by the Great Depression. They suffered mass unemployment, record price rises and falls in the standards of living.
      - Workers went on strike, and German currency depreciated in value and the economy suffered as investors moved their money out of Germany.
    - - Article 231: Germany and its allies were forced to take full blame for the start of World War I. A deep hatred for the treaty and the victors of WW1 stemmed from this injustice.
      - Reparations: Germany had to pay for 'loss and damages' (reparations). Germany's economy became poor and unstable
      - Military Restrictions: Germany and its allies were placed under a number of strict military restrictions, including the army being limited to 100 000 men, the production of weapons was limited, te air-force was disbanded and conscription was banned.
      - Colonies: German territory was given to countries such as France, Italy, Belgium, Poland and Denmark. This caused mass ethnic separation and resettlement.
      - League of Nations: An organisation with the aim of keeping world peace by settling disputes through negotiation. However, not all countries could join, they had no army and some countries ignore their requests.
    - - After Hitler came into power, he started violating the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Britain and France accepted this (because they didn't want and couldn't afford another war), known as the policy of Appeasement.
      - However, because Britain and France were just allowing Hitler to violate the terms, he kept rising in power. On the 1st of September 1939, Hitler invaded Poland after promising not to request any more land. The policy of Appeasement was abandoned and war was declared on Germany on the 3rd of September

      - Was disappointed by the terms of the T.O.V.
      - USA began to limit Japan's western influence, so Japan signed an agreement with Germany in 1936
      - Japan invaded China - 1937
      - 1040 - Japan signed the Tripartite Pact with the axis powers
      - Atomic Bombs
        
        Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagaski
        
        6th August 1945 8:15am - atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima
        
        80,000 people killed, 70,000 people injured, 69% buildings destroyed, people suffered from cancer and radiation.
        
        After the bombing, US president said that if Japan didn't agree to expect more bombs.
        
        9th August - second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagaski
        
        15th August - Japan surrendered
    - - Start of WWII - USA didn't see Japan as a threat.
      - 7 December 1941 - Japan attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii
      - USA, Australia and the Netherlands declared war on Japan
      - Germany (ally of Japan) declared war on USA.
    - - After the attack on Pearl Harbour, Japan claimed Singapore, Hong Kong, Phillipines for their resources.
      - Japan claimed Birma - New Guinea
      - Japan had the upper hand for the first two years because Britain and USA had underestimated them.
  - - - weren't permitted to serve in the military, but instead were expected to knit, raise money, encourage enlistment, etc
      - 1940 - women were encouraged to join services.
      - Women's Auxiliary Australian Airforce (WAAAF) was established in 1940
    - - Airforce - 18500 women
      - The women's army services consisted of 24000 women, and the women's royal navy service consisted of 2000 women.
      - Some women were involved in traditional men's roles (truck driving, etc) but weren't permitted to work outside of Australia, except for nurses.
