Gender
attitudes, feelings, characteristics, and behaviors that a given culture associates with being male or female (or labeled “masculine” or “feminine”)
Masculine
having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with men, usually strength and aggressiveness. Conventionally regarded as male.
Feminine
having qualities or an appearance traditionally associated with women, especially delicacy and prettiness. Conventionally regarded as female.
Expressions
Gender Role
socially-constructed roles, behaviors, activities and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women
(This is "assigned" by society)
Gender Non-Conforming
behavior or appearance that does not conform to an expected gender role
(This typically goes against society's expectations)
Gender Identity
a person’s internal, deeply-felt sense of being male or female, or something other or in-between
(This is felt by the individual)
Gender Expression
the way in which a person expresses their gender identity, typically through their appearance, dress, and behavior.
(This is chosen by the individual)
Cisgender
people whose gender identity is the same as their assigned or presumed sex at birth.
(This is accepted by the individual)
Gender Binary
a social system that constructs gender according to two concrete, opposing categories - male or female.
(This is imposed by society)
Gender Non-Binary
also known as Genderqueer, a wider, more flexible range of gender category for identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine (identities outside the gender binary).
Genderqueer may express a combination of masculinity and femininity (androgynous), or neither.
Sex
a term used to denote whether an individual is female or male, determined by a physician or other medical professional at the time of birth.
(This designation is often made solely based upon an examination of an infant’s genitals.)

Intersex
a general term used for a variety of conditions where a person is born with biological conditions (such as hormones, chromosomes, reproductive or sexual anatomy) that do not fit the typical definitions of female or male.
Transexual
(also known as transgender) a gender description for someone who has transitioned (or is transitioning) from living as one gender to another.
Sexual Orientation
Heterosexual
a person who is sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex.
Commonly referred to as “straight”
Homosexual
sexually attracted to people of one's own sex.
Commonly referred to as “gay”
Bisexual
not exclusively sexually attracted to people of one particular gender; attracted to both men and women.
Pansexual
a person who is not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity. Experiences sexual, romantic and/or spiritual attraction to any gender identity/expression
Demisexual
a person who does not experience sexual attraction until forming a strong emotional connection with another they want to have a romantic relationship with
Asexual
the lack of sexual attraction to others, or low or absent interest in or desire for sexual activity.
