Safety & Vehicle Identification
Safety
Dressing for safety
Don't wear loose clothes (neckties/hoodies)
can get caught in moving parts like fans/belts
don't wear open-toed footwear
sharp/heavy parts can fall on your feet; foot injuries will be prevented with good work shoes.
don't wear rings, watches, or other jewelry
rings/watches can accidentally short-circuit electrical components & cause severe burns.
do secure long hair
long hair can get caught in tools/moving parts.
do wear safety glasses
eyes cannot be replaced and are susceptible to injury.
Physical injuries.
most common types of injuries are minor.
when pushing a wrench away with an open hand
use more leverage (a long handle if needed)
never push a screwdriver towards yourself
don't use your hand as a hammer.
Lifting and Jacking a car
it is never safe to use only a jack
identify correct lift points and plan what points you will use to lift and what points you will support with the jack stands.
always use jack stands and wheel chocks
once the car is properly supported and chocked, remove the jack
check the car before working under it. make sure jacks stands are not sinking into ground and giving the car a gentle push to see if it moves or appears steady.
Jacking a car
jack up vehicle slowly and safely. making sure you are lifting on a structural part of vehicle. next, support the car with jack stand and remove the jack so it's not in your way and no one will trip over it.
using wheel chocks
always place a wheel chock in the opposite corner of the jack stand. if you are lifting the front passenger side tire place a wheel chock behind the rear driver side tire.
Vehicle hoist
center vehicle on the lift using correct lift points.
check ceiling clearance before raising vehicle.
drive on rack
when using a rack car should be pulled on the rack slowly and carefully
someone should guide the driver and help keep tires centered on rack. person should not stand directly in front of vehicle.
obtain a full demonstration before using drive on rack
carbon monoxide poisoning
do not let your car run inside your garage even with garage door open.
when starting a car
ensure the transmission is in park or neutral
no one is near the engine compartment if hood is open.
FIRE
prevent fires by cleaning up spills and combustible materials and avoid sparks.
have a plan if fire does start. keep a fire extinguisher handy, know how to use it, have evacuation plan in mind.
gasoline safety rule
store gas and flammables in approved/sealed containers
disconnect battery before working on fuel system.
wipe up gas spill immediately
keep any source heat away from fuel system parts.
never use gas as a cleaning solvent.
compressed gas
tanks storing compressed gas can be very dangerous
Battery safety
chemical burns: batteries contain sulfuric acid which will eat through clothing/cause burns on skin. keep batteries upright never hold them directly against clothing/skin. protect eyes with safety glasses. immediately wash if contact is made with acid.
Electrical burns: electrical burns are caused when too much electrical current flows through conductor. to reduce changes never wear jewelry working on a car and always disconnect battery.
jump starting car
last connection should be made to metal on engine
always look for polarity symbols and do not solely rely on colors
if you accidentally connect the wrong clamp to the wrong terminal, hundreds of dollars of damage will be done to your car's computer.
Electric shock
never use an electric tool unless is has a functional ground prong.
never use an electric tool on a wet shop floor
don't use damaged cords.
Compressed air safety
never blow compressed air at yourself or someone else.
never spin bearings with compressed air.
make sure you use attachments designed for use with compressed air tools.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
lists ingredients of the chemical
describes precautions and health hazards associated with the chemical.
explains fire and explosion hazards of the chemical.
suggested first aid in case of skin contact, inhalation, swallowing.
Vehicle Identification
MAKE: Toyota, Ford, Dodge, Honda
MODEL: Tacoma, Taurus, Sedona, Civic.
Model year
can be found on the hood sticker
