An elderly female patient has had osteoporosis, DM II, hypertension. She now has blood in her urine. There is concern with the kidneys because of her high blood pressure and her bone problems.
Structure of a nephron
2 types of nephrons
-
Cortical nephron
-
Have short nephron loop, just penetrating medulla
-
-
-
Renal corpuscle
Glomerulus: tangle of capillary loops, glomerular capillaries
-
-
-
-

-
The filtration, reabsorption, and secretion of specific molecules in nephron

Information on osteoporosis, DM II, and hypertension
Osteoporosis
-
Bones are fragile, and risk of fracture increases
-
-
Hypertension
-
Major cause of heart failure, vascular disease, renal failures, and stroke
Heart must work harder; myocardium enlarges, weakens, and becomes flabby
-
High blood pressure affects kidneys because it harms blood delivery to the kidneys and damages the tissue and cause renal failure
DM II affects the kidneys because it does similar damage as high blood pressure does on kidneys, and they damage the blood vessels and they won't work as well.
Osteoporosis affects kidneys because it causes a hormonal and mineral imbalance that affects blood vessels that go to the kidney, making it insufficient.
Hematuria: allows blood to leak into urine, caused because of a leakage in kidneys
Polyuria: huge output of urine, is one of the signs of diabete mellitus II
