Biomimetics is the use of technology in order to make natural models.
Has helped to make products more sustainable,
innovative and efficient
Humans have tried to use natural models in order to improve man-made systems.
it mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human challenges
Examples
Cleaning up pollution
Industrial farming and food production
One of the fastest trains on the world, the bullet train was inspired by the bird Kingfisher
Velcro was inspired from some plants that have hooks
Even they have been backpacks design inspired by animals, like backpacks with the shape of an armadillo
Biomimetics is the study of nature which is used to understand natural mechanisms that we can apply in different fields like technology, science, engineering or medicine.
Goal: The main purpose of biomimicry is to approach nature in order to study its models, we can than imitate these models and apply them to different fields of research to solve different problems in an environment friendly manner.
Problems to solve
Air pollution:
Water quality
Medical problems
Pros: By using models observed in nature we already have a clear idea of how it works, and how we could use it for our benefit.
Biomimicry allows us to use the environment as a source of inspirations to create environmentally friendly solutions.
With biomimetrics efficiency, productivity, and performance levels would all increase.
Cons: In order to properly implement a natural model into a human field it would be very expensive.
It may take a long time to find a model that can adapt into one of our problems.
Its very likely that these models won’t work the same in our world then they did in nature, so if not studied properly this could cause a huge waste of money which could’ve been spent otherwise.
These models may be used for the wrong reasons, for instance, governments could use these to develop weapons or ammunition.
Ideas
The creation of a water purifier
leeches have been used for solving nervous abnormalities thanks to the suction they make and the proteins they secrete. We can make a product that can suck as leeches done and with the help of chemical innovation the proteins can be made
We can design a product which cleans indoor air. Industries make a lot of air pollution, bothering neighbors and biomes
Biomimetics inspired surgical instruments like orthoses and prostheses. This have a crucial role in medicine. It’s purpose is to imitate the function of the original organ or tissue. Now patients have more opportunities of recovery and life expectancy.
Architecture
Biomimetic has inspired architecture all around the world, it has become a contemporary philosophy of architecture the one goal is to seek solutions for sustainability in nature not only by replicating the natural forms of trees, rocks and more, but for understanding what makes unique those forms.
