Cell Organelles and Their Function
Nucleus
It is known as the brain of the cell.
It controls all activities inside the cell.
It contains the genetic material of the cell.
The chromosomes are present in the nucleus. The chromosomes contain DNA (Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid) and the DNA contains the genes which are the hereditary traits.
Ribosomes
Help in protein synthesis.
Present in rough endoplasmic reticulum
Endoplasmic reticulum
Endoplasmic reticulum helps in transport of proteins and synthesis of lipids (fats).
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum - helps to detoxify poisons and toxins in the liver.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum - ribosomes attached, protein synthesis
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell.
Releases energy in the form of ATP molecules.
Lysosomes
Digest old and worn out cells.
Known as suicidal bags of the cell.
Golgi apparatus
Storage, modification and packaging of products in vesicles.
Sometimes, complex sugars may be amde of simple sugars in the Golgi apparatus
Involved in the formation of lysosomes.
Plastids
Chloroplast - Helps in photosynthesis, gives green color to leaves
Leucoplast - stores starch, kitchen of the cell
Chromoplats - gives color to parts of the plant
Vacuoles
Large vesicles that hold water or air
Give structural rigidity to the cell.
Centrioles/Centrosomes
Helps with cell division in animal cells.
