My Question: Can the stories we tell correct injustice?

Revised viewpoint: The stories we tell are a starting point to correcting injustice, because we need to know all sides of a story to achieve justice; but it's not enough to stop there

What units can I connect to this?

Enrique's Journey & Immigration: it shows an immigrant family that loves each other & tries to provide for each other, which challenges the "dominant narrative"

Medea: If you think the play criticizes society for putting Medea in an impossible situation, then this story takes the first step of showing the injustice people like Medea face

Dystopian Fiction: I think dystopian stories can be warnings for us in our world, like in the article "They Created Nightmare Worlds for TV"

What else comes to mind?

This makes me think of dominant narrative & counter narrative- what do I say about myself vs. what does the world say about me?

The Central Park 5 and "When They See Us"- some people in advisory thought telling the story made a difference, some people disagreed.

Movements like #iftheygunnedmedown and the #MeToo movement- Hashtag Activism

"Of all living, sentient creatures, women are the most unfortunate. We must save and save to raise a dowry; then the man that agrees to marry us becomes master of our bodies: a second burden greater than the first. Loss and insult: that is all we have." (Euripides, Medea)

"The negative view of women was deeply rooted in Greek culture. Hesiod, a poet who lived around Homer’s time, saw women as an evil but one that was necessary for producing children." (Carol Moulton"Ancient Greek Women")

This was the dominant narrative on women in Ancient Greece, so it's what Medea is fighting against

Medea speaks out for herself!

"Lisa Joy, Nolan’s fellow creator and showrunner, said that dystopian narratives can serve as a way to explore potential futures in moments of relative calm.
'If you look at history, there’s cycles of war, of poverty, strife, famine and disease,' she said. 'You know it would be hubris to think we were immune to those cycles forever.'" (Dave Itzkoff, "They Created Nightmare Worlds for TV")

warning

These stories can be a way to prepare or warn people for what might happen if we don't change unjust habits: like Medea shows what happens when people aren't given any rights!

Some people think of Lourdes and other mothers like her as neglectful or selfish, but the book showed me that Lourdes gave up everything to try to provide for her family- like Medea, she's a mom who cares and is misunderstood! But here she gets the chance to tell her own story & earn some respect

Reminds me of the song Dear Mama ()

"Social media is so easy to access that it enables a wide variety of voices to join the conversations surrounding the movements, and can even provide an access point to the government, with world leaders becoming increasingly active on Twitter." (Sophie Maclean)

trigger fingers turn to twitter fingers

More voices can be heard in the fight for change, so more stories are included. Could this lead us to justice?

"Trigger fingers turn to twitter fingers"-Drake: is that a bad thing though?

"When They See Us has brought renewed scrutiny to the host of actors who pushed the five boys into the criminal-justice system—namely, national media; President Donald Trump, who purchased full-page ads in 1989 in several New York publications to call for the five boys’ execution; and the former New York City prosecutor Linda Fairstein." (Hannah Georgis, When They See Us Indicts the System")

This is an example of telling people's story and it leading to justice
