Abolition of slavery
-
Olaudah Equiano
Equiano worked his way out of slavery by buying his freedom (his kindly master allowed him to earn money). He was the first black person to write about his experiences of being a slave in the English language. His book sold thousands of copies and he toured Britain reading to large audiences about his shocking experiences of being kidnapped from his village in Africa and his awful journey on the slave ship. In 1792 Equiano told his story in Newcastle and Durham.
Toussaint L’Ouverture
He was a former slave who led a rebellion against the French and British. Thousands of slaves stole weapons and killed the British and French soldiers in charge of the country of St Domingue. They were successful as they took over and set up the first independent black slave state which they re-named Haiti meaning ‘higher place’. : :

economic reasons
There was a growing argument that stealing African men, women and children and forcing them to work was not the best use of the Britain’s money. For example, in 1776, Adam Smith's study into The Wealth of Nations concluded that slavery was bad for Britain’s economy because of the costs involved in keeping slaves under control.
