        the teeth chew the food into smaller pieces
        
        saliva makes the food soft enough for you to swallow.
        
        digestion starts in the mouth
        
        the digestive juice in the saliva helps in the digestion process
      - gullet
        
        1) no digestion occur in gullet
        
        2) the gullet is a tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
        
        3) it has muscles to push the chewed food down into the stomach
      - stomach
        
        the food is digested further and mixed with other digestive juices
        
        this helps to break down some food into simpler substances
        
        the food which has now become a liquid-like substance, moves to the small intestine.
      - small intestine
        
        2) digestion is completed in the small intestine
        
        3) the digested food and other nutrients pass through the walls of the small intestine and enter the blood stream. the blood then carries them to all parts of the body
        
        1) the food is further broken down by the digestive juices into simpler substances. More digestive juices are added to the food.
        
        4) the undigested food is moved into the large intestine
      - large intestine
        
        water and minerals are absorbed from the undigested food. (they pass through the walls of the large intestine then enter the blood)
        
        undigested food is then formed into waste materials
        
        the undigested food goes into the large intestine.
      - anus
        
        the waste materials are removed from the body through the anus
