5) Diagnostic imaging
- Emphysematous cystitis, cystic calculi, and pyelonephritis may be found in animals with urinary tract infections.
Treatment
1) Exercise
- Associated with a substantial
reduction in insulin requirements
2) Diet
- Dogs should be fed a restricted fat, moderate protein diet high in complex carbohydrates that contains increased amounts of dietary fiber to slow down absorption of glucose from the small intestine.
- Cats fed a low carbohydrate,
high protein (approximately 50% protein) diet
- Obese animals should be fed a dietary regimen that results in weight loss, since obesity induces insulin resistance
- The initial insulin dose is 0.5 units/kg in the dog and 0.5 units/kg or 1-3 units in the cat.
- Treatment can be initiated once or twice daily, but the majority of animals are best managed with twice daily insulin.
- Blood glucose concentration should be monitored 2-3 times 4-8 hours after the first insulin injection to ensure that hypoglycaemia does not occur at this dose.
