Rabbit basics
-
Hospital basics
Fluid therapy
-
-
-
Cannot assess dehydration in same way as dogs and cats i.e. skin tent, sunken eyes
-
30ml/kg bolus may be good for starters, not whether this is absorbed quickly. If not rapidly absorbed, may be v dehydrated and require IV fluids
-
Nutrition
-
-
-
fresh long grass, dandelions, grated carrot or apple
-
-
Preventative healthcare
Annual vaccination
-
In the UK, a combined vaccination is available against Myxomatosis and RHD-1. To protect rabbits against RHD-2, they usually need a separate vaccination. It's usually recommended the vaccines are given two weeks apart
-
Neutering
Benefits
-
-
-
help reduce hormone-related behaviours such as aggression, scent-mating and mounting (but may not completely stop)
-
Male rabbits can still have viable sperm up to 6 weeks after castration and need to be separated from unfettered females during this time if pregnancy is to be prevented
ideally performed at 5 months (as rabbits get older more fat develops which complicates surgery) may be older for males depending on size of testicles.
Parasite treatment
-
-
Nematodes
-
Obeliscoides cuniculi occurs in wild rabbits in various parts of world and domestic USA rabbits and causes haemorrhage diarrhoea
Cestodes
-
Coenurus serialis
-
-
onchospheres from this tapeworm migrate to the subcutaneous tissue where they form cysts that are palpated as soft swellings under the skin
occasionally a cyst may be found in the orbit, where it causes retrobulbar swelling
-
Ectoparasite
-
may be underlying reason for infestation e.g. dental pain reducing grooming. Must examine for underlying disease.
-
-
Reproduction
Male
-
Testes descend at 10 weeks, but may be withdrawn back into abdomen through permanently open inguinal canals
-
-
-
Anaesthesia
-
Common regimes
-
Medetomidine, ketamine, butorphanol
-
-
AVOID CORTICOSTEROIDS
-
-
Stimulate mobilisation of fatty acids from adipose tissue, may contribute to onset hepatic lipidosis
Behaviour
socialisation period for young rabbits is 4-7 weeks, so handling and familiarisation with human contact should take place during this time
most problems occur when introducing rabbits to a new partner, they are very conscious of status!
Considerations
easily stressed
-
-
-
advice
covered and secure transport container, travel as short as poss.
bring companions, food (+water)
-
Ensure to ask owner whether rabbit is used to bowl or bottle and if a litter tray is used and what litter it contains.
-
-
-
-
towels, blankets, some calmer if eyes covered.
only acceptable to have rabbit on back for temperature, as trancing rabbit increases cortisol. Dorsal immobility response may also be useful for health checks and non-invasive procedures such as sexing and nail clipping. Not appropriate for general interaction
