1.2.2.Mole Concept (n) Johnny Kuang
Avogadro constant: the number of particles per mole (6.02 × 1023 mol–1)
Scientific Notation
When number is less than one, scientific notation should be used
Example: 0.499 mol (3sf) should be 4.99 * 10^-1 mol (3sf)
When looking at significant figures, only consider the mantissa(the front number in the equation)
Know the relationship between moles, mass and molar mass.
Moles: n(mol) = m(g) / Mr (g mol^-1)
mole (symbol ‘mol’), as the unit for amount of substance,
Mass: m (g) = n (mol) x Mr (g mol-1)
Molar Mass: Mr (g mol-1) = m(g) / n(mol)
molar mass (units: g mol–1) as the mass per mole of a substance
Multiplying/Dividing Significant Figures
The answer should have the same significant figures as the lowest significant figure in the calculation
Example: 1.20 * 28.06 = 33.7g (3sf) The answer has the same sig figs as 1.20 because it has the lowest sig figs in the equation
Examples:
Moles of a substance:
Mass of a substance:
