The Passion Week
Palm Sunday
Matthew 21:1-11
Jesus rode on a colt- symbolized his humility and coming in peace.
People lay down their cloaks and palm branches, which was usually done for a king
They thought that Jesus was going to free them from Roman rule- did not understand what he actually came to do.
They shouted "Hosanna"
Jesus wept for Jerusalem because they were so oblivious to what was to come.
The Pharisees strongly disapproved the entry.
Jesus at the Temple
Matthew 21: 12-17
He overturned tables and drove all the salesmen out.
'It is written" Jesus said "my house will be a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers."
The Pharisees disapproved of it all very strongly.
Jesus healed the blind and lame and the children called shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David".
Reminds us that God's presence is sacred and not to be taken lightly.
Jesus curses a fig tree and has his authority questioned
Matthew 21:18-26
Jesus sees a fig tree with only leaves and he curses it-immediately the tree withers.
He told the disciples if you have faith and do not doubt you can do what he just did and even more.
At the Temple Jesus was asked 'By what authority are you doing these things?' by the Pharisees.
They wanted to catch Jesus doing/saying something wrong.
Jesus was in control and he once more showed his authority.
Jesus said he would respond if they answered the question whether John's baptism came from heaven or people. Unsure what to answer the Pharisees let it go.
Anointed by a woman and betrayed by a friend
Matthew 26:6-16
Jesus was at the home of Simon when a sinful woman came in and poured expensive perfume over Jesus' feet
She was so desperate and longed for God's love with all her heart
The disciples thought it a waste of perfume.
Jesus was deeply moved and forgave her all her sins
She had prepared him for his burial.
Shows us that everyone is welcome into God's kingdom
Judas agreed to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver
The priests were delighted.
The Last Supper
Matthew 26: 17-30
Jesus ate the Passover meal with all his Twelve disciples
He told them that one of them would betray him.
He broke the bread and said "Take and eat; this is my body. The breaking of bread symbolizes God's grace for us but Jesus is also referring to his sacrifice for dying on the cross for us.
Jesus also raised the cup and said 'drink this is my blood". This symbolizes the blood that he was about to shed for all of mankind so that our sins could be forgiven and that a new covenant could be established in his name.
They went to the Mount of Olives after the meal was over.
Gethsemane
Matthew 26: 36-46
Jesus goes to Gethsemane, a garden at the bottom of the Mount of Olives and he took Peter, James and John with him.
He tells them to keep watch as he goes and prays- the disciples fail and fall asleep.
This happens three times
In the Bible the number three is used 467 times and it is also the number of times Peter denies Jesus.
In the old Hebrew language the number three means harmony, new life and completeness.
Judas comes and betrays him with a kiss. Jesus is then arrested.
Peter cuts of the right ear of the high priest's servant, but Jesus tells him to stop and he heals the ear.
Shows us that we need to love our enemies as well, even if they treat us unjust. Just like Jesus did.
First brought him to Annas who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas the high priest.
Jesus' Trials
Matthew 26: 57-68
Jesus faced six trials of which 3 were Jewish and 3 were Roman
The first three trials were Jewish and they included: the trials before Annas (former Hihg Priest), Caiaphas (High Priest), and the Sanhedrin.
The other three trials were Roman and they included: the trials before Pilate (Roman governor), Herod, and then Pilate again.
Pilate tried to free Jesus but gave in to the people's objection and gave orders for Jesus to be crucified.
The trials and execution were illegal.
It was carried out at night and in secret.
Jesus had no one to defend him, and the leaders could not find 2-3 witnesses to testify against him.
Jesus was executed the same day after which wasn't allowed.
The means involved bribery which was forbidden
The Crucifixion of Jesus
Matthew 27:32-56
Jesus said 7 last phrases on the cross
“Father forgive them for they know not what they do” Luke 23:34
“This day, thou shall be with me in paradise” Luke 23:43
“Woman behold thy son, son behold thy mother” John 19:26-27
“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me” Matthew 27:46
“I thirst” John 19:28
“It is finished” John 19:30
“Father into thy hands I commend my Spirit” Luke 23:46
This showed that Jesus still thought of others and obeying God's law till the end.
The soldiers that beat Jesus didn't even know what he had done or who he was
He was mocked and beaten for our sins-for us
