7.5 Renewable Resources
Solar energy
Passive heating (using materials that absorb energy, insulated structures) active heating (structures designed to absorb heat and distribute it)
Sunlight strikes thin transparent wafers of silicon with trace amounts of metals, creating a flow of electrons, generating electricity (photovoltaic cells)
-
Disadvantages
Photovoltaic cells are expensive and generate low net energy,
-
-
-
Hydro Power
-
-
Uses energy from rivers, waves, tides
Disadvantages
Most productive hydro power sites have already been dammed, with old ones becoming useless. Global warming affects the water cycle so rivers, lakes, and glaciers are decreasing.
-
-
-
-
-
Hydrogen
-
-
Disadvantages
not viable because fuel cells have a negative net energy, fuel cells are expensive, and hydrogen is very dangerous to store and transport.
Geothermal
Energy comes from heat stored in soil, underground rocks, and fluid in the mantle
-
Advantages
-
Most efficient, clean, and reliable source of energy
-
Biodigestors
Biodigester is fed with organic material that is broken down by bacteria in an anaerobic environment to produce biogas (like methane) along with other solids used as fertilizer.
Advantages
-
Helps get rid of and make use of food waste, plant waste
