Preoperational Stage
Is divided in two substages
Symbolic function substage
Ages 2 -4
Can represent objects mentally
Artistically, can draw familiar objects. Like houses and people
Speech is used to externalize their own thinking, not much to communicate with others
Because of this, they engage in parallel play; playing alongside others, but not with others
They can use symbols to roleplay and represent people, like moms and dads
As they discover unpleasant experiences and people, they express their fears in dreams and symbolic play, such as super heroes
Children believe inanimate objects to have human feelings and intentions
The intuitive thought substage
Ages 4 - 7
Thinking change from symbolic to intuitive thinking
They have the inability to decenter, conserve, understand that objects can be organized into a logical order and to carry out inclusion tasks
This stage focuses more on the limitations of children's thinking and mental tasks they were unable to do
Children focus on how an object appears now and are unable to track transformations
Proposed by
Jean Piaget
Children are described as being egocentric
They are controlled by their own perceptions, thoughts, and ideas, and cannot consider the viewpoint of others.
Ages 2 - 7
