Handshape
Five parameters. Any of them can be manipulated to create poetic effect in sign language literature, but of the five, manipulation of the handshape is arguably the most prominent.
Within every sign language, a limited number of Handshapes combine with other parameters to create a very large number of potential signs to form the vocabulary of everyday sign language
The choice of handshape for a sign is often visually motivated, because a particular handshape visually represents a particular concept.
Two major ways in which signers can use handshape to increase poetic effect in sign language literature.
One is to create visual and aesthetic pleasure, often through repetition of the same or a similar handshape.
The other is to add symbolic value to a poem or story, so they are used metaphorically.
