Russian Resistance-The peasants who worked the land were called serfs, they were tied to the land owned by the nobles and they worked that land for little to no pay. The serfs were practically slaves, once that land was sold, the serfs were sold along with them. In 1774 there was fierce show of resistance to it, the southwest of Moscow, near the Black Sea , there was a haven for runaway serfs. These people were called the Cossacks, and they happen to be skilled. They rose up in rebellion against the system of serfdom perpetuated by Catherine the Great. This became known as the Pugachev rebellion, they did gain superior ground but were eventually crushed by the superios power of Russia. As a consequence, Catherine clamped down even harder on the serfs to prevent another uprising.
