Production of materials - Coggle Diagram
Production of materials
metals
mined from ground
as metal ore
extraction
2 ways
heating ore through furnace
sometimes metals can be crushed then heated in a furnace
electrolysis
uses electricity to extract metal out of its ore
plastics
Most plastics are made from crude oil
crude oil is extracted from ground
chemicals that get joined together called monimers
monomers make chains called polymers
process called polymerisation
Fibres
tiny hairs that are spun into yarns
fall into 3 main categories
natural
fibres obtained from natural sources
regenerated
Chemically Treated Natural Materials
synthetic
Man-made fibres
environment
can have a negative effect on environment
Contribute to
pollution
Drilling for oil. Drilling can release
toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.
Sludgy waste material or oil can also
leak and pollute surrounding land
or marine habitats- harmful to
wildlife living there.
destruction of natural habitats
e.g. Obtaining wood for timber, paper &
board can cause deforestation. Destroying
forest habitat & having a negative effect
on the plants and animals living there.
climate change
