art supply cabinet
aesthetics
-
rather than labels, I will laser cut out the symbols above the storage area
cubist design: interlocking squares, still strong structure
retro: uses design/fashion from the past, maybe Picasso-styled artwork on the side if there is extra space?
materials
plastic
acrylic: waterproof, lightweight, easy to work with on laser cutter
wood
plywood: crisscrossing grain direction makes it very strong, while it is easy to apply veneer over it. I may use this to create the main frame of the cupboard.
metal
not as great of a choice - may rust/corrode, react with paints, etc. Added weight may not be suitable for portable scenarios.
-
form
under the desk cabinet: weight doesn't matter, sturdy, drawers near the top so you don't break your back every time you open one
portable: lightweight yet sturdy, inclusion of a handle?
desktop: cannot take up too much space, drawers is a must to make it more compact
fashion
utilitarian design, just gets the job done while using as little material as possible
-
maintenence
-
drawers must not jam, push/pull must be smooth as to prevent rattling
sustainability
-
plastics should be made from thermoplastics - these are better for the environment as they can be re-used by reheating and remolded to the desired shape
cost
cost should be kept down, this product is targeted at students, who usually do not work.
