Messages about society?
Acceptable behaviours, changes in time?
Themes
Presentation?
Do words for tone trigger you?
Do other poems have similar themes?
Common features: structure, language, context etc.
Are themes clear in the beginning?
Always look for more than one theme.
Language
Techniques?
Do these sections have double meanings or interpretations?
Connotations of certain words?
Big picture by linking techniques to meaning in poem
Emphasis or repetition?
HOW and WHY writer uses any technique
Structure
Organisation into stanzas?
Contribution to author's intentions for the poem or situation described?
Particular structures (sonnet, ballad)?
Further divisions: connection between the layout and the ideas of the poem?
Rhyme scheme, repetition, alliteration?
Is there also enjambment or caesura? What do these signify about the poem?
