Urban regeneration – re-using areas in the older parts of cities which have been abandoned as a result of counter urbanisation. This has allowed re-imaging of areas and whole cities E.g. Nine Elms (Battersea Power Station).

As the urban settlement grows further some people choose to move out of the city into rural settlements and commute in for work and services. These settlements are known as dormitory settlements.

As a result of agglomeration and suburbanisation some towns grow into cities. Sometimes these will join up and become a conurbation.

Urban settlements first appear as a result of agglomeration. This is the concept that the original centre of people and economic activity are concentrated at favourable locations.
