-At age 26 he began working with illiterate adults in northeast brazil, during the 1960s he was a professor of history at the university of Recife, where he became involved in a movement to combat illiteracy.
-He became familiar with poverty and hunger from an early age as a result of the Great Depression. In 1931 his family moved to the more affordable city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes.
