When looking at the coast, we can determine the cause of winds. Humid air at the earth's surface warms and rises. It condenses due to adiabatic cooling, and latent heat release causes the air to rise even higher. The air then cools more from adiabatic cooling, is displaced horizontally, and sinks back to the earth's surface. As it sinks it begins to pick up heat due to adiabatic heating, and as it moves across the earths surface it picks up moisture. The process continues, and the flow of air creates wind from the coast.
