MANAGING VERY YOUNG LEARNERS

Use teddy bears as a resposibility or distraction

Practicalities
Establish toilet or drinking water rules
Organise toilet runs while someone else is in charge of the class
In short classes, toilet runs before the class starts are better
Always have tissue for blowing noses
Routines
End and begin the lesson in the same way
Ask students to have the material set and organised
Make sure to have your own papers ready before class starts
Have a 'hello song' for the children to sing
Have a 'goodbye song' or a mini conversation where children repeat what you say
Take register to install calm before class starts
Discipline
Seating arrangement must be well-managed
Make sure children hve only the essential material
Use yellow and red cards to check behavior
Ban the use of pencil sharpeners
Draw happy and sad faces on the board to motivate their perfomance
