Pathophysiology
Burn injuries release chemicals which cause increased permeability, allowing plasma to leak from the vascular compartment into the tissues. Damage to cell membranes cause an imbalance in the sodium potassium pump. Both of these factors together cause a decrease in cardiac output and edema. If patient does not receive fluid resuscitation, fluid will continue to evaporate through wound surface and cause a decline in blood volume which cold ultimately cause hypovolemic shock.
