Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) - Coggle Diagram
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Structure of PNS
43 nerve pairs
31 pairs branching from spinal cord (spinal nerve)
12 pairs emerge from the brain (cranial nerves)
2 types of neurons
Sensory (afferent)
Detect nervous sensations
eg: pain and heat
Transmit messages towards the CNS to be interpreted by either the spinal cord or the brain
Motor (efferent)
Transmit messages away from CNS
Stimulate effectors to perform a function or reflex
2 separate divisions
Somatic nervous system
Controls voluntary resposes
Responsible for relaying sensory and motor information between the outside environment and the CNS
Innervate outer sections of the body (skin and skeletal muscles)
Any muscle movement or voluntary motor output uses the somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
Handles involuntary movement in the body
Innervates our internal organs
Controls vital functions
Heart rate
Respiration and breathing
Digestion
Sympathetic
Fight or flight response system
Causes general alertness and excitement
Body's way of responding to a perceived heat
Parasympathetic
Rest and digest response system
Restrores the body to a calm or restful state
The reflex arc
Sensory detection
Interpretation of sensory input
Motor output
