Henry VII's rule in England, 1485-1509
Why was there so much unrest in the early years of Henry's rule?
How did Henry attempt to secure his position?
changed the date of his reign to the day before Bosworth
(this meant those who fought against him were traitors could have their estates seized which would add to the Kings worth)
Henry arranged his coronation for 30th October
(this was before parliament met so that it could not be claimed he was King because of parliament)
Henry asked for papal dispensation to allow him to marry Elizabeth of York
as she was a distant cousin (took place after Henry was crowned, so it couldn't be claimed he owed the crown to his wife)
a number of Yorkist's who had a stronger claim to the throne were still alive, the most important were Edward Earl of Warwick and John de la pole Earl of Lincoln - Warwick was successfully removed and sent to the tower but Lincoln professed his loyalty and joined the King's Council
Henry kept the Earl of Surrey in prison until 1489, but the Earl of Northumberland was released at the end of 1485 and restored to his old position in control of the North
Henry's DISADVANTAGES: he was largely unknown in England, had just spent 14 years in exhile in France during the Wars of Roses, he had a lack of knowledge of the country
Henry's ADVANTAGES: the country would support a king who was offering peace and stability even his claim was weak, he was not beholden to another noble family like Edward IV was
