Development of an ecosystem which promotes community-led conservation and management of natural resources, and development of sustainable livelihood alternatives
A. Building 'Brand Nagaland' - promoting eco-tourism, low-risk adventure sports, (experience of) organic farming and exotic culture
Umbrella brand building exercise for Nagaland as destination for responsible tourism using prominent communication channels
Securing in-principle acceptance by the state government; extensive use of strategic communication across mediums to bolster brand Nagaland
Working with the influential leaders of local clans/tribes to arrive at the broad concept for building the brand for Nagaland
Local community aware of the benefits that accrue to them as a result of thriving ecotourism (under Brand Nagaland)
Training and capacity building of community members: development of home stays; drivers tour operators, instructors for adventure sports; developing means of engagement around local culture; training of youth to engage with tourists (on-ground and on social media)
Using different channels to reach out to the community - including churches to build a broader acceptance for the idea of promoting brand Nagaland, and ecotourism in specific
C. Cultivation and development of market for medicinal, aromatic, food herbs and NTFPs
Identification of medicinal and aromatic plants, NTFPs which are/could be cultivated in the wild, but have not yet been linked up [possibility of value addition and packaging]
Collaboration with local agencies/local bodies for carrying out value addition activities, branding, packaging along with the community (possibility of carrying out capacity building of community members around value addition)
Establishing linkages with markets for medicinal and aromatic plants; leveraging 'Brand Nagaland' for creating value and market for these products; involving youth using social media for creating new market opportunities
-
D. Promoting modern as-well-as organic agriculture methods: Create value-based market for the produce
Gradual shift to horticulture and wet terrace cultivation; reduction in area under jhum cultivation: resulting in increase in organic soil carbon content and reduction in soil erosion
Community led construction of micro-check dams, rain water harvesting ponds: Linkages with existing government programmes and schemes for monetary support
Setting up agri-focussed self help groups for promoting seed farms, particularly for vegetables and setting up water pumps
-
Capacity building of local communities with respect to taking up horticulture and wet terrace cultivation; involving angami tribes in training sessions who are considered to be experts in wet terrace cultivation
Development of low-cost tech-based capacity building modules, which could be administered within the community with minimum human resources; explore involvement of youth in carrying out such sessions
