Reasons why different ethnic groups came to Singapore
The Malays and the Arabs
They could not find work in their homeland
The Arabs were looking as they were looking for better trade opportunities than what they had in their homeland
Wars
They came to Singapore to escape from the war-torn areas in Sumatra, Java and Malaysia as they found life in these war-torn areas unsafe
Starvation
Due to the Cultivation system imposed by the Dutch in 1830, the Javanese people were unable to produce enough food to cope with the rapidly growing population
Family
Some came because they missed their relatives who were in Singapore
The Indians
The population was increasing very rapidly and there was not enough food or jobs for everyone.
There were long droughts when the farmers’ food crops failed and famine resulted
There were outbreaks of wars and rebellion in India during the 19th century
Chinese
There was a shortage of good farmland , this was made worse as the population increased very rapidly
As a result, many people were suffering from starvation
There was disorder and unrest as the people were trying to overthrow the corrupt Qing government and to make thing worse, China was at war with countries like Britain, France and Japan
Many Chinese had heard of opportunities in Nanyang so they decided to go there to loom for work and a better life
Better trade and business opportunities
Traders from Europe, India, China, the Middle East and neighbouring islands were attracted to Singapore
There were many trading opportunities because of Singapore’s excellent geographical location, it’s status as a free port, and its free immigration policy.
Jobs
There were many jobs available as Singapore was a new and growing trading settlement
Labourers from other parts of the Malay Archipelago , such as the Javanese and Baweanese were attracted to come to Singapore because of higher wages
