Susie Salmon
watches souls rise from hospitals and nursing homes, Franny taught her how to do this
She meets with other Mr. Harvey victims in heaven
Also watches people at train stations while she dreams of her life before
The novel is written from her point of view, she tells us the story of her family and friends after her death
Watches over her family continuously from heaven (in the gazebo), she ensures they are safe
She was jumping for joy in heaven when Lindsay was proposed to
Watched over Lindsay and Samuel when they went into the abandoned house, she made sure no monsters were there
Appears herself to her family many times, for example to Lindsay when she breaks into Harvey's home
Over time, Susie begins to grieve her own death less and less
She begins to enjoy heaven instead of constantly worrying about her family
Her love for Ray continues throughout the book
She dreams of kissing him, and then finally has sex with him while she is in Ruth's body
Determined to help her family find her murderer and tries to reveal evidence to them

She leaves for her father's cabin in New Hampshire, she has given up on her family and chooses to stop fighting
Comes back to her family in Pennsylvania when Jack has his heart attack
She makes up with Jack in the hospital and agrees to stay home
Jack Salmon
"All his energy was inside [the house.]" (160)
He hears Susie talking to him while he is in the hospital
Jack hears a voice telling him to let go after Buckley tells him it is time to move on
Has a heart attack right after this
A very loving father who will not give up on his family
When Abigail comes home after leaving her family, he does not hesitate to forgive and welcome her back
Mr. Harvey
Moved out of her house when Lindsay broke in
He knew they were close to finding out more about him and his crimes
Lies and tells to cops that his cornfield drawing was him trying to figure out Susie's murder
Dies from and icicle dropping on his head
He notices Lindsay stalking him, he begins to itch because he wants the Salmon's off his case
His life is greatly affected by the toxic family he grew up in as a child
Killer of many young girls and older women, Susie finds out about all his murders and rapes
Dreams of Lindsay after he sees her jumping out of his window
Lindsay Salmon
Finds out about Abigail's affair first when she spots her red scarf at Len's office
Broke into Mr. Harvey's house and stole his drawing of the cornfield
Played on the boys soccer team with Samuel, her boyfriend
Is engaged to Samuel, and they soon into the house they dreamed of living in once they got married
They give birth to a baby girl and name her Abigail Suzanne
Stalks Mr. Harvey
Buckley Salmon
He "turned into something stronger than a little boy" due to the hurt in his heart (217)
Tells Jack he needs to get over Susie
Prays to Susie to help save Jack after his heart attack that he is blaming himself for
Detective Len
Believed he was the one to blame for Mr. Harvey's freedom because he was with Abigail in the mall instead of answering Jack's call
Has Susie's charm when it is found and gives it to their family even though he isn't supposed
He kisses Abigail outside while Jack is in surgery
Grandma Lynn
