WHO ARE L2 READERS?
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Students who chose to undertake all or part of their tertiary education in a country other than their own and move to that country for the purpose of studying.
J-1 visa enables foreign nationals to come to the United States to teach, study, conduct research, demonstrate special skills or receive on the job training for periods ranging from a few weeks to several years.
International students whose native language is not English must submit proof of English Language Proficiency.
(TOEFL/IELTS/SAT/ACT/GSCE)
GENERATION 1.5 STUDENTS

They have limited knowledge of academic English and often identified as having weaker literacy proficiency than native speakers.

EFL STUDENTS
Their native language are not English and they learn English in a country where the English language is not the official language.
English is not the medium of communication for them on a daily basis, they learn the language just to either fulfill graduation requirements or a major field of study.
EFL reader’s language development is slower in general as their motivations and interests may not be identical with international studennts.
EFL students may not have the same resources outside of classrooms to develop their L2 skills as the language is not the primary language in their country.
IMMIGRANT STUDENTS

Immigrant usually engaged in a wide variety of oral language and literacy activities at home but this practices have not been investigate to their literacy development.

There are immigrant students who act as translators for their family,
helping parents with government or medical paperwork.
