The results showed Malaysia education is approaching the OECD average. The ministry aims to
achieve above the global average and position Malaysia in the top one-third countries
by end of another two cycles
Which areas are we weak in?
Reading literacy
Why does this happen?
The PISA 2018's survey on Malaysian students also noted that they do not enjoy reading as a hobby compared to the survey on students in PISA 2009.
The findings also showed that students only read when they are forced to, or for a specific reason, not as an interest
The three reading material enjoyed by students according to the survey are comics, fictional and non-fictional books
It could be seen that the students' reading trend should be studied to improve the reading literacy among Malaysian students.
What did the PISA 2018 survey said about this trend?
54% of the students could identify the main idea in a text of moderate length, find information based on explicit, though sometimes complex, criteria, and reflect on the purpose and form of texts when directed.
63% could recognise the correct explanation for familiar scientific phenomena and use such knowledge of identify, in simple cases, whether a conclusion was valid based on the data provided.
The majority of students (84%) agreed that their teachers enjoyed teaching and were diligent and interested in the subject taught.
They also agreed that the teachers gave additional guidance to those who needed it and would make sure that the students understood the lessons.
