Life before colonisation: Display map of Indigenous Australia. Locate what Indigenous nation occupied the area of the landing of the First Fleet and the nation in which we live. Use a 'Gallery Walk' to examine elements of Indigenous life before colonisation. Display Joseph Lycett's paintings around the classroom. In small groups students rotate to each source and record what they notice about shelter, food, lifestyle and community around the image (ensure to explain the context of these images as being created shortly after British arrival and from the perspective of a British person). Student's also record any questions they have. Through collaboration with Indigenous community, organise an excursion or a special visit, to learn about how Wiradjuri people lived prior to colonisation. Following these experiences, introduce students to the concept 'terra nullius'. Using a think-pair-share and a wrap around teaching strategy (one pair shares their opinion, the next pair comments on this opinion and then adds their own insight), allow students to share their opinion of the term and why they think the British applied it to Australian land.
