Anglo Saxon literature

During the Middle Age the lyric became popular. It expressed intense personal emotions and was sang with musical instruments
The main features of Anglo Saxon poetry
Alliteration was used to link the two halves of the line
Kenning
Each line was divided in two halves by a break or a cesura and had four stresses.
The metrical romances
It emerged during the Middle Age. They were about:
Chivalry
Love
Supernatural creatures
The epic poem
It deals with the recollection of a glorius past in the national history of a country and the brave deeds of heroes.
The scene is often occupied by supernatural creatures
Is a long narrative composition. The main theme is the neture of heroic life and the function of leadership in heroic society. The style is elevated.
The society described is aristocratic and military.
The narrative is made by a series of vivid, pictorial flashes or type-scenes
