During the 19th century, thanks to colonial expansion, English Empire looked invincible, and so English people felt in the same way. However, WWI was the largest slaughter of English History. This event destroyed all certainties of the invincibility of English people. The failure of the English Empire became its failure. At the end of the war, English society presented a deep gap between the young generation, shocked by war, and the old generation, the only one that represented the English tradition.
