ARCHITECTURE

🚩 Biomimetics is the study of nature with the purpose of understanding the principles of different natural mechanisms in order to obtain ideas and apply concepts for different areas in our society. Basically, biomimetics is an innovative form of technology that imitates nature to improve our lives.

ENGINEERING

🚩In the area of architecture, biomimicry is mainly applied with the purpose of improving the built environment by developing the construction and operation and as a result, reduce the environmental impacts such as waste, carbon emissions, among others. This subject of exploration based on biomimetics does not only enhance creativity in architecture but it also helps to connect humans with the environment.

Real life example

🚩The 6m tall termite's nest in African grasslands: This biomimetic architecture is made of natural elements such as soil, tree bark, sand and termite saliva. Nevertheless, these nests are actually firmer than concrete. Moreover, the nests of termites maintain a temperature of 30 degrees celsius since they are sensible to heat. Thus, Mike Pearce noted these characteristics and constructed the first all-natural cooling structure in Zimbabwe. In the roof and lower flowers of the building there are holes that allow natural ventilation which are similar to termite's nests. Captura de pantalla 2020-05-03 a las 8.26.45 p.m.

🚩Technology and robotics have always involved certain limitations of computers and technological devices. However, as technology continues do develop, there are more advanced and complex options available. Thus, with biomimetics engineers and designers are able to come up with more advanced designs that can completely change the lives of a lot of people.

🚩There is a fundamental link between health and nature which has been established since ancient times by humans. Taking this into account, the exploration of different mechanisms in our environment has helped to bring several solutions and development regarding different techniques or elements required for surgeries.

Real life example

🚩Sealant for vascular surgery: The French company Gecko Medical created a bio-inspired product which is basically a sealant for vascular surgery based on the glue-like secretions of the Californian sandcastle worm. Surgical glues commonly present issues and they don't stay in place as the body is always in motion. In order to solve this, Gecko Medical copied an adhesive secretion that has been perfected for millions of years to dry fast and work even in wet environments without any issue which as a result created the perfect design for surgical glue. 🚩Over the recent decade, the influence of biomimicry on engineering, specifically on the designs of several vehicles, has helped to improve their function, efficiency, resistance, among other aspects. Taking this into account, one might say that engineers have learned a lot from nature over the years and the process of biomimicry has helped them to tackle several issues.

Real life example

🚩Japanese bullet trains: The Shinkansen Bullet train in Japan is known for having a powerful nose , which was actually inspired by the form of a Kingfisher's beak. Engineer Nakatsu's purpose of imitating the aerodynamic shape of the bird's beak was to make the train that connects Japan's biggest cities faster and quieter successfully. 🚩Advanced Robotic Arm: This design was created by German engineering firm Festo with the inspiration of the way in which an elephant trunk works. The advanced robotic arm is a new biomechatronic handling system which thanks to biomimetics is nowadays used to transport heavy loads, expanding and contracting by inflating or deflating air sacs within each “vertebrae”, inspired by the way in which the elephant trunk works. 🚩Throughout the industrialization, men have focused on improving life conditions with innovative technologies and ideas. However, our survival he physical dilemma of living on limited resources and a polluted planet. Solutions to the lack of resources and survival problems have not always been clear to us, although the answer can always be found within nature.

🚩An interesting method to solve these problems is known as biomimetics. This concept uses nature as the ultimate model, standard, and advisor for technical and scientific innovation!

CONCLUSION

🚩Thanks to the accumulation of innovative ideas, humans have accelerated the development and evolution of our civilization throughout the years.

🚩Biomimetics is one of the best methods to help the development of our civilization while reducing environmental pollution

🚩Biomimicry has the potential to create better results in comparison to artificial processes of development while also ensuring a positive or neutral impact on nature.
