Introduction to New Media
What is New media?: In this reading we went over what exactly media was. This was the very first introductory piece upon how we were to begin thinking about our smartphones.
Technological Determinism: This article went into depth upon whether or not we are in control of the technology that we have. There are primarily 3 viewpoints towards this. The first being "hard determinism" and that technology develops on its own and we are powerless to stop it. "Soft determinism" is the viewpoint that we have the power to stop technology and we have a choice to use it for good or evil. The third viewpoint is to view new technology as "neutral" and determine its use as good or evil.
Social Shaping of Technology: This article goes into detail upon whether ordinary humans are powerless towards how technology can and will be used. The author on one viewpoint believes that only programmers have a choice. Then on the other side of things the author also states that it may very well be the "ordinary user" who is actually in control towards how we utilize technology.
A Brief history of the smartphone:
"The Accidental Universe": The author believes that we are hooked to our smartphones and we can not go without using our phones. The author also states that the consumers or the end-users, now equipped with this tool, will not realize and take in what is around their natural reality in preference to what is in their virtual surroundings.
"Tools of the Mind": in this article Carr goes into detail upon how we are continually unintentionally creating tools, with additional refinement every step of the way. This progress is thought of to be accidental in nature as many of these tools pose a scientific use that was never thought of while developing these tools.
"Google Knowing": The author of this article explains that going without using Google now is close to impossible. Google possesses a great tool and has been a great addition to humankind. But with too much use, Google can be seen as a crutch. A crutch that is susceptible to fake news and misconstrued articles.
Technology Mindfulness Project: In this project, we go into detail about multiple prompts given to us typically once every 2 weeks. During this time not only are we creating our own "virtual diaries" but we are also capturing and gathering data towards how often we use our smartphones, and noting down how to limit these uses while also finding out what uses of the smartphone have specifically been used for most of the time.
Habit Making devices: Marvel App. In this assignment we as students created our own apps that we viewed was a necessary application that we as students could use to help benefit ourselves. In this assignment I created an app that would allow student tutors to help assist you with classes. What made this app special is that it utilized a built in GPS to help locate the tutors, as well as a created medium towards how students can immediately get in touch with tutors from an app accessed off of their smartphone. This assignment also taught myself how much work and effort goes into creating an app like this from tech developers, such as adding back buttons everywhere for the user to escape from their current screens.
Use. Gratify. Repeat. Kurzweil & Technology: In this article Kurzweil explains how fast and quickly technology is continually being developed from smartphones and computers alike. He explains from his past how quickly this technology is developing and continually getting better. He also states that although most technology being created is for good purposes, that we must be weary of any possible evil and negative purpose that may arise with the given gift of new technology.
"Her" film analysis: With this assignment, we go into detail about the life of Theodore Twombly, and how the director is eliciting feelings and views towards technology and Theodore's life throughout the movie. For this assignment I chose to asses the colors in the movie, and how the movie color-coded what types of feelings came from the movie itself.
Outsourcing Memory
"Reading War and Peace on my iPhone": in this article the author takes on the challenge of reading arguably the thickest book that has been written within the past 200 years. The author shows that although the iPhone was viewed as a way to read and get information through short and quick bursts, but the iPhone can be utilized in more extreme circumstances such as reading "War and Peace".
"Mastering Memory": this article highlighted how with the rise of social media, we as humans are now given access to continue creating continuous information that will become archived for lifetimes to come. I also believe that this article explains that we are becoming used to utilizing the iPhone as a way to access information instead of genuinely understanding the information presented upon itself.
Digital Socialites
"People would rather be electrically shocked": This article shows that we as humans are so conditioned with our dependency on the smartphone, that when bored we do not know what to do with ourselves. This could be shown in the article as people would be inflicting pain onto themselves in order to for them to fight boredom.
"The Social Debate": in this article the two authors argue for and against social media, on one side one author argues that with the advent of social media we are further connected amongst one another. In the other corner, the other author counters that statement by saying that we are ignoring our real life relationships more than our ancestors would have roughly 100 years ago.
"Connected but Alone" In this Ted talk the speaker explains how she was once excited about technology, and now she has found a problem with it. With humanity furthering technology we have become more socially isolated amongst each other due to the intense usage of social media and other gadgets of the smartphone.
Going Dark
"Time well spent": in this video the character goes into detail about the moral problems with that tech companies have been using in order to capture users attention and time instead of assisting the end user.
"Bored and Brilliant": in this video recording, the host explains how much we as a society have become addicted to the smartphone. And how during this time we have been stunting our growth by fixing our boredom by using our phones so often. This has raised concerns and issues by doctors alike due to the limited research about what is at stake with cognitive functions and if we are preventing our boredom, what could possibly happen by fighting it.
